Waiting on a job...and the train

Hey All! It's been a while, but I thought I would do a brief update, while I'm waiting for an ad to be finished so I can send it off to the pub., and while I wait till its time for me to walk to the train station. So what's new with me? Well first and foremost: I AM MOVING OUT!!!! I got an apartment on Spruce Street near Rittenhouse Square, for those of you that don't know Philadelphia, that's a really nice section of the city...so come and visit! It's a studio apartment on the first floor of a brownstone and it's great. I cannot wait to move in, especially after this morning (just another reason to add to the list of why I'm happy to move- not something I'm going to share, I'm trying not to dwell on the past). But anyway, I move in May 1, which is in exactly 3 weeks...and how much packing/cleaning have I done...nothing! So, I'm starting tonight, which should be interesting....I DESPISE PACKING! And while I hated it while I was living in dorms, at least then you were only moving stuff that had been there for less than a year. I'm moving out and I've lived in this house for 2 years, but ah well.

The family is great. I spent this whole weekend with various family members. I was with Dan on Friday night and Saturday morning- we had a great time. Then I spent Sat. night/Sunday with the Fennell/Diodato family...also great times. Oh news about Dan- he was thinking about spending a semester abroad in Ireland this fall and has decided against it because........he was picked to be the assistant director for NYU's mainstage production. This is the biggest show that NYU puts on, and this year they are doing "Hair" and the director who is an NYU professor also directs Broadway shows, so this is great for Dan.

We're going to Scotland in June (Dan and I for 5 days, my parents for a little longer)- to celebrate my parent's 25th anniversary and to spend some time together, since we do less and less of that lately. The whole time Dan and I are there, we'll be in Edinburgh, Scotland...I'm so excited, another country to cross off my list- YAY! Dan won't be coming home this summer and I of course have to work, so this will be a good time to just chill together. And ironically/scarily the day we get back will mark my 1 year anniversary at CHOP (wow, that time went fast), and right before that will mark my 5th year out of high school (wow, getting old).

I can't wait for the summer...this weather is insane, it freaking snowed here last week. I can't wait to hang out on the lake on the weekends, eat ice cream, eat Rita's, party at the lake, go to the ocean and just be able to not wear a jacket. I LOVE THE SUMMER! and it's almost here. We were talking about the beach last night at dinner, and this year Dan and I are going to go to LBI for a couple of days to spend time with everyone (and I mean EVERYone...when Dan and I are there, they'll probably be as many as 20 of us there, ranging in age from 70 something to 2...but that's what makes life exciting.)

Alright, I'm still waiting for this ad and getting annoyed at a certain someone. Alright now it's finished, except I doubt I'm going to make my train, but let's see how fast I can walk.

Peace out!
~Vicky

I was just reading my old entries and I noticed something amusing. On the entry from January 19th, I did a survey (i know shocking) and on question 17, I wrote something about how my grandparents have been dead for a while and they are still sitting in my aunt's basement. To those of you who just read this for fun and don't know me (which I think is a little strange, but whatever)...I would like to stress that they both were cremated and that they are sitting in the original boxes that they came in. So to re-cap they aren't a) sitting decaying in her basement and b) we didn't get fancy urns, they are in the sealed shut tupperware like boxes that they came in.

Well I see that I haven't done a real update in a long time so here it is...enjoy!

Honestly there hasn't been much going on. I had a very nice Christmas...it was weird to go right back to work afterwards, but it was fine. Apparently absolutely NOTHING happens during the week in between Christmas and New Years. Then I came home on the 30th of December and I met up with my brother and parents in Scranton, where we went to Cooper's for dinner (so good...even though I can't eat a lot of the stuff). Then Dan and I went to the Chierichella's for New Year's Eve and since most of the people that read this were there that night I won't go into detail, but I had fun and apparently passed out in the middle of the floor..so I'm sorry to those that had to climb over me. Also we found out that Ryan is a flip cup master! And although I had been drinking I don't believe I was so drunk that I forgot this next bit...I think I was upstairs. Apparently my favorite person EVER has decided to move to Israel...that's right Michael Weiss, I'm talking about you. He said he made the announcement to everyone, but I really don't remember this and I'm sure I would have...anyway, I'm upset about this. But I'm proud of him too. So in exactly 5 weeks Sarah, Vanessa and I will be in California...perhaps even at the Oscar's...but even if we're not it'll be awesome. We got VIP passes to the Ellen Degeneres (our favorite lesbian) show. I can't wait, we're gonna have so much fun! So that's all that's been going on in my life. This Friday I went out for happy hour with people from work and next Friday I'm going to a black-tie-affair at the Auto Show for work, which should be cool.

Well that's it...nothing else. Hope everyone is enjoying their second semester (for a lot of you, your last semester...*hums JAWS theme song*...haha. Seriously, it isn't that bad. I know I complain about work sometimes but honestly you couldn't pay me to go back to school right now...maybe in another year or two...but right now the stress and headaches and sleepless nights and worrying is still to fresh in my mind. With that said I'm going to continue my weekend of doing nothing and loving it.

Be HONEST. Not very many people have ever heard of the show "Flora the Red Menace." Don't get down to the results and se you're only 5 away from being a "Musical Theater Master" and change a few of your answers! Just own up, and if you make yourself more knowledgeable. Here's to you John Lennon

Posted on 2005.12.08 at 17:07
Current Music: The Beatles
I know I already did an update, but the radio station I listen to at work, does this beatle break every day from 3-4, and so today they've been doing tributes to John Lennon, with famous musicians talking about where they were when they found out or what impact he made on their lives and the future of music. And it just got me thinking. Why is it impossible for everyone to live in peace? Why does there have to be war and why can't all the countries of the world join forces to create a world of peace?

So, while I'm not one of those people who thinks that John Lennon's birthday should be a national holiday, I do think that this man had so much to offer to the world, besides an amazing musical gift. I think that anyone who is brave enough to stand up in front of the world and declare his beliefs without fear of rejection deserves to be respected. So, to all the politicians out there, "imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do, nothing to kill or die for, no religion too, imagine all the people living life in peace, imagine no possesions, I wonder if you can, no need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man, imagine all the people, sharing all the world--you may say i'm a dreamer, but I'm not hte only one, I hope some day you'll join us, and the world will live as one."

Now, those of you who think you know me so well, probably think I wrote that in defiance of the Republican party because its rather obvious that I'm a democrat, but here's where you're wrong. If we followed John Lennon's thoughts, there wouldn't be Republicans or Democrats, there wouldn't be wars. I don't think he's saying that there wouldn't be disagreements, there would be, but perhaps some day (probably not in my lifetime) people will remember what they taught their kids about fighting and will take the time to sit down and disect the problem. Anyway, just wanted to share my opinion on that.

The real truth is that 25 years ago a great man was taken from this world with no rhyme or reason and he will always be remembered.

John Lennon

Things are changing

Current Music: The Who
Well, here I am at work...but there's only 5 minutes left in the day. But, I'm staying late today, because there's no internet in our house so I'm hanging out here, doing some stuff on the internet and doing some Christmas shopping as well. But, that's not really why I wanted to write in here. I'm not sure who all reads this, if anyone, but I need to say something and I'm going to try and keep it as anonymous as possible. So, as we all know Vicky isn't a big fan of change, but then again who is? So, I've been working at CHOP now for about 6 months and the job is great and there is nothing for me to complain about in terms of the job itself. However, the situation that I've been put into is not a fun one. See, I miss college, but what I miss is what happened every night and on the weekends and the friends that I had. There is not one part of me that misses actually being in college and if you were around me during my last semester you knew I wanted to graduate more than anything. All the people that complain about having to go into the real world and they wish they could stay in college forever, that wasn't me. I do miss the social atmosphere but I would trade that in for not having to do homework and dealing with all the crap in a second. And while, the real world isn't always fun (although this week I was introduced to the wonderfulness of holiday parties) it is much better than college, because for the first time in your life you are 100% independent. So I guess as I type this I realize I don't really miss college I just miss the friends that I had last year, while I was in college. And there's another situation that is starting to brew and its getting to be that point when you're boiling water and there are little bubbles before the water begins to overflow. Basically, I'm not happy. I'm happy with my career and I'm healthy so I know for many people that would be enough and some days that is enough. But I'm unhappy because I've gone back to not having any friends. Sure, I have the people I work with but they're your "friends" from 9-5 and they have their own lives that are busy leading. And then I have my roommates. And if any of you do read this, this doesn't have to do with you, it is my perspective. Anyway, I have 3 roommates, but because of the events that are occuring in all of our lives there is not nearly as much time for one another as there once was. I used to think that just because I was working it wouldn't mean that I was any different than when I was a year older in school. But it does, everything changes when you start a new job. You have to be somewhere by 9:00 am and you can't look like you did when you would show up hungover to your 9:00 classes. You have to look presentable and you have to be able to operate in a working fashion. Therefore, the nights of going out drinking and getting 4 hours of sleep can only work once in a blue moon. I still don't go to sleep until 2 in the morning but I'm sober when going to bed and I sleep soundly. You care more about the little things than you did while in school. And it is quickly becoming relevant (although it was last year too) that the location in which I live in is not the place that I should be living in if I want to meet other people. I can't afford to go out every night in Chinatown, let alone a place like Manayunk, where it is much out of my price range. Oh, right that's the other thing that I can worry about now...money! Where I once was slightly careful about how I spent my money, I'm now extrememly careful. I have car payments, rent, utilities and insurance to pay for. And while I understand that various friends are going through their own problems, I just don't know how to react because we're all going through a lot of change right now. It's like when someone would come into a room 1 week before the semester was over and complain about their work load. Well HELLO...it's finals time, everyone has a lot of work to do. Get over it. So, that's why i'm writing in here, because i figure hardly anyone if no one reads this and that way I can complain about my problems and not annoy anyone. And as much as my life has changed in the last 6 months, its bound to change even more by next June. For the first time ever, the friends that I have are going to be my friends only if both sides of the relationship work on the friendship. It was different when we were all in college and even if we didn't talk for 3 months it wouldn't matter b/c we would pick up where we left off when we saw each other over winter break, well that's not going to be the case now, and that is something that I am experiencing right now. And some of the relationships will disappear and although i'll miss them at first, i'll have forgotten about them in a couple of months. I don't wish anything bad for these people, its just time for change. We'll each go into our seperate directions and live our lives the best we can. And there's a lot of other stuff going on but its not stuff I can share in here, because if people do still read this it would hurt feelings and I don't want that to happen either. And besides this entry is getting long enough. I have to catch the shuttle to the train station. If you do read this, I don't have internet at home, so if you want to talk you have to call the cell or stop bye the house.

PEACE OUT!

Veteran's Day

Dear President Bush:
Could you go at least one day without annoying anyone? Seriously, yesterday you spoke about Veterans Day, an important holiday and an already overlooked one. It has already been commercialized by car dealerships and malls with huge sales and now you take a speech that should be about recognizing and remembering all the veterans this country has and continue to try and convince people that your poor decision to go into Iraq was a good idea. Political views aside, that's just not fair. I am the granddaughter of 4 veterans. Both my grandfathers, my step-grandfather and my grandmother were all in the armed forces and my brother and I were one of the few people who knew when Veteran's day was. We grew up hearing stories about the wars that they fought in and the things they did for our country. They are all heroes in my book. When I was in high school every year on Veterans day I would leave school and go to a Veteran's day program to play patriotic tunes. Most kids (including myself at times) would complain because it almost always rained and/or snowed...but our director (the son of 2 veterans) would always say, "the troops didn't stay home when it rained or snowed..and neither are we" We would go and listen to a local veteran talk about the importance of veterans and what they did to protect the security that we Americans have come to expect. That's what Veterans day should be for. It should not be about continuing to impress people or convince people that you are not as bad as your polling data says you are. It is not too much to ask to take one hour long speech out of your year to thank people. Thank them for allowing to have more freedom than anyone else in the world, thank them for protecting our rights and thank them for joining the armed forces so that others were not forced to. Especially as we have just surpassed the 2,000 Americans killed in Iraq this would have been a good time to thank the families of those men and women for allowing their children, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, aunts and uncles to continue to protect our rights even though it meant leaving an empty hole in their lives forever. That's all I wanted to say. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,

Victoria Waldron

To my readers: I didn't actually send this but I'm seriously considering it.

A real update

So, for those of you that don't live in Philadelphia, SEPTA (the mass transit association) is on strike. Well, all of it except for the regional rails. Wanna know why they're on strike. There's actually a couple of reasons. One of them is because they haven't had a wage raise in over 2 years. If this was the main reason I might be tempted to agree with them. However, their main reason is the medical insurance. Now, unless you've been living under a rock you know about the medical crisis going on in our country. There are thousands of people that do not have the money to get medical insurance, it is very expensive and it is even more expensive if you have to go to the emergency room or to the doctor's office. However, when you are living paycheck to paycheck as a lot of people in this country are, it is a "luxury" that many can't afford. Now, I'm not going to go into why this is the President's fault and why I don't like him. But, SEPTA Union 234 is striking because their new contracts would require them to PAY SOMETHING for medical insurance. This would mean a deductible from their paycheck and/or a co-pay. I have $10 deducted from my paycheck every time and when I go to the doctor I pay $20. This is NORMAL! There are very few people that pay nothing for insurance. Instead of finding the uninsured medical insurance, why don't you just let them drive a bus or a trolley...apparently they can get it for free. And the best part is SEPTA is surprise that they aren't receiving support from the community. Well, let's look at the situation. The only form of transportation that is running in Philadelphia and the suburbs are the regional rails (commuter trains). There are no buses, subways or trolleys to get you from your house, your office to the train. You have to figure that out on your own. There are over 400,000 people who have to seek alternative transportation. So what does that leave? Well, a) you can drive, but of course then you have to park your car in parking garages that were full before the strike AND gas isn't exactly $.99 a gallon anymore or b)you could walk but of course it is getting colder and it also gets dark at 5:00 now and let's face it, Philly is a big city and although techinically everything is within "walking distance" things are still spread out. I read a story today about a mother and her son that walked to his preschool...it took 2 hours! THat's a long walk. So, now the train stations that were at one time a well run building is now absolute chaos...they have anyone who works for the station collecting tickets, because when you get on the train there is no way passes will be checked. You have to wait in lines that are wrapped around the building and in some cases out the door. And if you can't get on your train because its too packed...that's too bad, you can wait for the next one. My usual 25 minute commute on the way home today took 55 MINUTES. Why you ask? because it takes 10 minutes at each station because, of course the trains are like 7 cars long and there are only steps or platforms at 3 of those cars. I'm miffed that I have to wake up and take the 7:25 train (usually I take the 8:23) so that I can be slightly early for work, because of course once you get off the train at 30th street...you can catch one of three shuttles (that are still running) but ooh shocking, there's long lines there too. But, I'm just miffed because I have to wake up early, this does not come close to the people that have to walk for 2 hours just to get to work, where of course employers aren't going to cut you a break that you can't get to work; schools aren't allowing students to be late because of the strike (oh right, Philly schools they don't have buses for the city students). And SEPTA wonders WHY they don't have community support??? Anyway, just wanted to share that. I'm not even sure if anyone reads this anymore, but I wanted to get that out of my system.
